RAIN/FOG EXPECTED TO NEGATIVELY IMPACT LIGHT DISPLAY THROUGH THURSDAY EVENING, 12.19
JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla (November 17, 2024) — Jax Beach Deck The Chairs (JBDTC) event organizers and volunteers will spend Tuesday, 12.17 through Thursday, 12.19 closely monitoring rain and dense fog impacts on the popular, free decorated lifeguard chair exhibit and children’s arts showcase. Now in their 12th season, Deck The Chairs (DTC) continues to produce a beloved annual tradition that provides residents and visitors with accessible, family-friendly holiday arts and entertainment space. DTC estimates more than .5 million attendees since its inception.
The 2024 event is highlighted by more than 70 decorated chairs in two locations. Twenty chairs decorated by students are on exhibit at Beaches location and Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. More than 50 chairs fill out the rest of Latham Plaza Park including ten corporate light show chairs and more than a dozen non-profit chair displays.
“Weather events are always the greatest challenge for Deck The Chairs organizers and volunteers,” explains DTC Founder Kurtis Loftus. “We work all year planning and developing for the 6-week event in public space, and every year we always move through some type of challenging weather event.”
Deck The Chairs wants the community to understand that their plan is to stay on top of lighting efforts; however, saturated ground and moisture from fog makes electrical work difficult and sometimes unsafe. “The sun needs to shine on the park for at least half a day in order for things to properly dry out,” adds Kurtis. “I feel for the chair decorators who work so hard, the volunteers trying their best, and our visitors who hope to see JBDTC in its fully lit beauty.”
